Going Out Alone

Normally I never have to go out alone at home because, like most people, I have many friends to spend time with, but since I will be traveling solo to Latvia, I was wondering if anyone has any tips on a good place to grab a drink and maybe meet some interesting people. I'm completely happy with meeting some cool locals for conversation and to learn about life there (obviously a pretty girl is preferred) and it's not just about hooking up with someone. I've also heard some bad stories about English-speaking guys going out alone in Riga so I obviously wouldn't go too far away from my hotel at night (ie. probably not smart to venture out of the old town right?), but I'm a physically fit and a reasonably careful traveler, so there must be somewhere I can be other than my hotel room alone right? Do you think a pub or beer garden is best? Probably, like here, going to a club alone is a bad idea. I suppose there is little chance of meeting locals in the old town because it's been ruined by the British stag parties and who could blame them. Maybe there is a good place to meet friendly locals during the day who might want to hang out again in the evening? Wow, that was a lot of questions. Thanks for anyone with an opinion on any or all of this.

Like everywhere in the world, going alone into night pubs is a bit risky

I think you will recognize "doubtful" places right away. Any normal bar or restaurant or cafe can be "seen through", i.e. its windows are transparent. It's not the good idea to go to the places which are hidden from the street.

In the old Riga you will also find beer gardens right on the open air. They are quite safe.

Thanks for the help Bro. Yeah, I've never been one to do this anywhere but a city I'm living in and very familiar with, but as I said, I would like to avoid just eating dinner somewhere and returning to my hotel. I'll probably stick to the beer gardens unless someone gives me a specific alternative and if the weather is nice, I'd rather be outside anyway.

I ll probably end up visiting riga alone, since my friends decided to spend their vacation in one of those party-going greek islands....
I appreciate all the advice I can get on this matter.
cheers!

Well, it depends... what kind of advice would you like to get?
It depends on your taste, the matter of interest.. a lot of things.

i think there are street crimes everywhere,so i guess you still stick to the old rules...watch where and who you deal with and more importantly be vigilant...these are general rules that applies everywhere on earth....be smart and always on your guard and dont be carried away....

just don't be drunk too obviously and don't show everyone your money and mobile and avoid dark smaller streets and don't walk too close to agressive drunk pupils. best is to find some foreign tourist or local company as soon as possible and to spend the night out with them.

friends and colleagues of mine have already been robbed by using pepper spray, knifes, beating and kicking. mostly in the dark. anyway have fun.
it didn't happen to me and i am still a frequent latvia traveller.

yes, I agree. anywhere you go on earth you cant get away from crimes. just behave in a way that wont put you in a bad situation.

any museums related to science or engineering? Also, do you have an aquarium?

I doubt we have an aquarium, even in the zoo, but I'm not sure...

As about "science/engineering" museums - the first coming to my mind is a Latvian Railway museum
