This year's winter was a hard time for Latvia - too many frost. But one day me and my Latvian girlmate, and our little daughter were forced to take couple of hours travelling by train, because our car was not designed for such a snowy roads. You must know, it's a very dangerous time in Latvia if driving by a car in a snowy winter - local governments do not take lots of care cleaning up the roads...

But what a surprise it was for me seeing a public toilet in the train we were travelling with... Specially after crossing Germany in and out by a train, I have a feeling I know how the human WC must look like... in Europe, you will see a well cleaned, perfumed place, often adjusted for disabled people.

In Latvia, it was in the middle of snowdrift (see pictures below).
Train's personnel didn't even take care to clean it up.

And - it was the ONLY ONE toilet for the WHOLE train, consisting of 4 or 5 wagons. The ONLY ONE toilet for about 500 people driving in, including little kids, women, grands.

It appears in Latvia they, by now, use very old and outdated wagons build in USSR times. Wagons themselves are not adjusted for disabled at all.

It's a shame for Latvian Railway, or how they call it - Latvijas Dzelzceļš - organization handling train passengers line. I've heard in the recent years, they can't make a deal with some trains company from Spain to order new wagons and trains.

Here in Latvia, they do have awful roads, awful trains and awful public toilets where it's dangerous to make shit.

Shit!..

Here how it looks inside. Quite a small, dirty and stinky room.

Here's the only little window to make an air fresh. Can't be opened because it's frozen in winter.

Can i use trains without paying for ticket? What is the likelihood of getting caught?
Would it be sufficient to lock myself in the loo for the duration of the fair?
Or would other urging people give me up to the authorities?

Twins:

You can't.

Twins:
What is the likelihood of getting caught?

100%. Each train has human controllers which check tickets as soon as you get in.

Twins:
Would it be sufficient to lock myself in the loo for the duration of the fair?

I doubt it could be possible, 'cause controllers usually check the loo as well.
Also, Latvian trains most often have just one WC for the whole train. Example is shown above

Or would other urging people give me up to the authorities?

I'm afraid, in this case, nobody will take care of you in Latvia, except controllers and policemen

There is no heating in this part of the train. Absolutely. A cold and usefulness toilet room. Just got back from one of the long distance trains and despite there is +2 outside, it's quite difficult to use the toilet for a woman.

To Valka or Daugavpils? That's a long journey to get stuck on such a train. :s

It is indeed. We were traveling to Daugavpils, really. It takes about 4 hrs in a train and it's almost impossible to sit the whole road without visiting the toilet room.

There is a way to take a bus, but in Latvian local buses, there are no toilets at all
