Places you must see when you visit Latvia for the first time?

I would like to know what people feel are places you must see on your first visit. Every country has places the locals like and that have real meaning to the people from that country. I am looking for places that help to really discover the soul of the country and the people. I hope that you can understand what I am asking. Thanks for your replies in advance.

It depends on how much time and budget you have for this. Most likely if you will choose Riga (the capital of Latvia only) you won't see a lot. Visit smaller cities like Kuldiga, Ventspils, Talsi, Cesis, Valmiera, lakes in Latgale area, and you will get the point about the country then.

i am planning to stay in riga since it is the capital and i want my hotel close to the international airport but at the same time i want to spent time on the beach. how far is the beaches from riga? does riga has beaches?

Riga's beaches are all located in the district of Jurmala. However, we have -10° now and I think it's not the right weather to relax on the beach

It depends on your matter and taste and budget. We can't answer the question before seeing the actual question

i would love to the historical museums, the presidential palace. and of course the night club called "red square". i bet is loaded with cute russians..

So... you already know what places you want to check. Then why are you asking?

"Red square" is not a club actually... it's a stage of the big night club called "La Rocca". It's not loaded with "cute russians" at all... mostly younger people and girls visit it. For cute Russians, you obviously need to visit a night club "Push" which has been opened just this September.

Historical museums... just visit the old Riga and you will find a lot of them. Check Museum of the Occupation and Das Schwarzhäupterhaus near that. The Presidential palace is located not far from there as well.
