Latvian Woman taking Husbands Surname

Hi All,

I have a question I hope can be answered. I am getting married in Latvia soon to a wonderful woman, the problem we face is this. Under Latvian Law if She takes my Surname it will be changed and spelled different to what my Surname actually is to make it Gender specific.

We do not want this. We both want her to able be to take my Surname as is without it being changed in accordance to Gender.

If anyone knows how to get around this so she can take my Surname as is without it being made gender specific I am more than willing to hear idea's and options.

This is up to the Latvian law, specifically about Latvian language law, and I know it causes many problems for non-Latvian surnames for years.

Unfortunately, there is no work around and it can't be changed If your will will keep the Latvian passport and the citizenship, her surname will be spelled following Latvian grammar rules.

The only work-around is to change Latvian passport to the citizenship of the other country.

yuta, you may be not right. The current Latvian law allows to keep in the passport the original name/surname amongst what is generally written in Latvian.

so about the question above: it is mandatory that your wife will have a "Latvianized" surname put in the passport, however she is also allowed in latin letters to write your original surname, despite it will be only written in and not showing up in the official documents, customs etc.

If you disagree with that, you have rights to discuss this thing in court.

It's rather a woman's choice
Taking husband's surname is a traditional, years-proven way of keeping the "generation" family. Keeping own surname, or sharing it 50/50 with a husband's surname is a modern way of going.
