Visiting

I´m planning to visit Riga in late October for the first time and wonder if there´s anybody within this forum who would like to meet for coffee and show me around? A bit of sightseeing a nice dinner perhaps?

Each year starts with the winter here, so it is quite a cold time. Possibly the best time is the summer, from May till August, it is quite warm and sunny period.

Would like to come to Riga and meet people in the Arts and Humanitarian field and possibly find a Love... I have read a few of your message. I am glad you have feed others country first timer to Latvia. I plan to have visited to Latvia. Can i know normally what language Latvia speak? and i go alone or with few friends. Big chance is alone.

I suppose, most of people speak Latvian and Russian. Not sure about two languages at once. Most of Latvian youth know Latvian only, and most of Russians know both.

I suppose, also many of younger generation know English, but definitely, not all who are living here so far - because most of those knowing English even at the basic level, have migrated to UK or Ireland in the recent 5-10 years.

Hi yuta, Is it have difficulties communication in Latvia? I Don't know latvia and Russian also. I come from Malaysia. Our common language is English in South east asia. Anyway Glad to meet you here.

I hv gone to France before. It was giving me challenge talk to French.

So far I'm definitely sure only small percentage of Latvia inhabitants know French. So you have a very small chance of being understood if you talk to someone in French on the street.

Like I wrote, most of younger people/youth should know English, at least they communicate at the basic level. Many people staying here have relative or friends in English-speaking countries, so at least they know couple of phrases But it doesn't mean you could widely speak English in Latvia or have a good job just because you know English.

So, definitely you may have sort of difficulties in Latvia if you know just English, but it also depends on the area WHERE will you communicate. I'm mostly sure in the Old Riga restaurants and bars mostly every staff member knows English at least at the basic level. But this is not about Latvia in whole, for sure!

I dont know any other language in Europe. I only know english. Hope is o.k for me to communicate in Latvia.

Why did you choose Latvia as your target? If you know English well, there are more suitable and comfortable countries for you than Latvia...
